PHOTO OP. is a new platform for contemporary art curated by artist, art writer, educator and publisher Emil McAvoy.
PHOTO OP.'s playfully critical brand references photography's longstanding complicity in self-promotion. The platform aims to offer genuine opportunities for innovative, relevant and responsive contemporary art to practitioners from Aotearoa and abroad, with a current focus on lens-based media.
Founded on a nomadic project-based model, exhibitions and publications are curated by invitation and collaboration.
PHOTO OP. also sells selected art work by negotiation, in partnership with other galleries and stakeholders, and returns a high proportion to artists.
New works are also commissioned through PHOTO OP. Editions in collaboration with artists.
PHOTO OP. operates both in physical sites and online. The first season of exhibitions is hosted by Skar Image Lab in a new custom-built gallery space within their premises, 1 New Bond Street, Kingsland, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, from June 2022 to early 2023. Further exhibitions, publications and events are planned for 2023 and beyond.
The gallery is open Saturdays 11am – 2pm & by appointment.
